The Town charter allows a political party to nominate up to four candidates for the Board of Education, but only two of those can get elected. Traditionally, each party nominates only two. (The Democrats nominated three a few years ago.)

Well, even thought the DTC nominated only two candidates this year, the RTC may nominate four. RTC Chairman Jim Campbell told the RTC tonight that the RTC Executive Committee recommends that four Republican names be put on the November ballot. While the choice of the number of nominees will be in the hands of the full RTC in their July 20 meeting, the Executive Committee will endorse four on July 13, Campbell explained.

On June 16, 2011 members of the Greenwich Police Department Detective Division executed an arrest warrant for the below listed subject for swindling money while posing as a Veteran in need.

The arrest warrant charges Garcia with the following crimes:

For over a year, Garcia has been falsely stating that he was an Army Ranger who was combat wounded after serving four tours in Afghanistan deceiving his friends, family, and the public. Military officials confirmed that at no time had Jesus M. Garcia been a member of the US Army. Garcia had split his living arrangements between a home in New York and a home in Greenwich, CT. During the time he was at one residence he would explain his absence from the other as military related which was patently untrue. On May 27th, 2011, Garcia met with Greenwich Police Captain James Heavey in anticipation of Garcia speaking at a Memorial Day ceremony. During conversations with Captain Heavey, it quickly became apparent that Garcia was a fraud and provided an investigating officer with a false name and date of birth. Garcia was arrested that day for Interfering with an Officer 53a-167a.

The Greenwich Police Department Detective Division continued to investigate Garcia and found two financial victims of his fraud and other instances that he posed publicly in uniform purporting to be a Soldier.

Garcia was released after posting a $2,500.00 bond and is scheduled to appear in Stamford Superior Court on June 24, 2011

PUBLIC INFORMATION: IDENTITY SOUGHT

GPD Case #11-100952

On 4/22/11, the subject pictured below reportedly exposed himself to a 12 year
old girl while inside a supermarket in central Greenwich. The subject then quickly
left the area driving an electric blue Toyota Prius with possible Connecticut
registration plates, which is also pictured below as the vehicle exited the parking
lot. The vehicle was last seen traveling west on West Putnam Ave toward the
New York state line. The Greenwich Police Department is seeking the public’s
assistance in identifying the unknown subject.

Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection Announces Mountain Lion Killed on Wilbur Cross Parkway Early Saturday Morning

At approximately 1:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 11, 2011, the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) was notified by State Police – Troop I, of a collision between a motor vehicle and a Mountain Lion Northbound in the area of Exit 55 in Milford.

The operator of the involved vehicle was driving a 2006 Hyundai Tucson SUV when it collided with the Mountain Lion. The Mountain Lion died due to injuries sustained during the collision and the driver was uninjured.

The 140-pound male Mountain Lion has been transferred to a DEP facility for further examination. The large cat may be the one sighted in Greenwich on Sunday, June 5.

The Connecticut DEP has been cooperating with the Town of Greenwich Police Department to investigate recent sightings of a large cat in the King Street area of Greenwich. Based on photographs taken of the animal and other evidence it appeared that the animal was a Mountain Lion. Mountain lions can travel long distances and may have found its way to Milford.

There is no native population of mountain lions in Connecticut and the eastern mountain lion has been declared extinct by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

This incident is still under investigation by DEP EnCon Police, part of which will be to determine if in fact the cat killed in the collision is the same cat seen in Greenwich.

DEP Investigating Sightings of Large Cat in Greenwich

The Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) today announced it is cooperating with the Town of Greenwich Police Department to investigate recent sightings of a large cat in the King Street area of Greenwich. Based on photographs taken of the animal and other evidence it appears that the animal is a mountain lion that has been held in captivity and was released or escaped. There is no native population of mountain lions in Connecticut and the eastern mountain lion has been declared extinct by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Anyone that sees this animal should not approach it and immediately call the local police and the DEP 24-hour Emergency Phone Line at 860-423-3333.

“Although there is no population of mountain lions in the Northeast, we believe that this animal may very likely be a mountain lion that has been held in captivity and either escaped or was released,” said DEP Deputy Commissioner Susan Frechette. “Our current information, which we will continue to evaluate, is based on hazy photographs we have seen and the size of the paw prints that have been left behind.”

There have been reported sightings of mountain lions in Connecticut in the past but none have been confirmed. The eastern mountain lion was declared extinct in March of this year by the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service so if this animal is confirmed to be a mountain lion it will be one that has been held in captivity. The closest confirmed population of mountain lions is in Missouri.

The DEP will continue to work closely with local officials to attempt to determine the identity of the animal. Anyone spotting the animal should contact local authorities and the DEP. Anyone having knowledge of where the animal may have come from can also anonymously contact the DEP at 860424-3333 with the information.

The Washington Post recently ranked what it believe to be the top 1,900 public high schools in the United States.
